Fresher Resume in India: CGPA, Class XII and Internships
A first resume for students and freshers in India: each section, how to write CGPA and Class XII and X marks, and how to show internships.
As a fresher, you have little or no work history. That is normal, and the people who hire freshers know it. They look at your education, your projects, your internships and your skills. This article shows what to put in each part of a first resume, and in what order.
Keep it to one page
A fresher resume should fit on one page. A reader can see all of it at once, and you are forced to keep only what matters. If yours runs onto a second page, first cut school activities that have nothing to do with the job. Then shorten long project write-ups to two or three lines each.
Contact details at the top
- Your full name, spelled the way it is on your degree certificate
- A phone number with +91 in front, one you will answer
- A plain email address, such as firstname.lastname, not a nickname
- Your city and state; your full home address is not needed
- A LinkedIn or GitHub link, if it shows your work
Many Indian resumes also carry a photo, a date of birth or a father's name. Leave these out unless the job post or your college's format asks for them. They take space and say nothing about your skills.
A short summary
Under your name, write two or three lines about you. Say what you are studying, what you are good at and the kind of role you want. Keep it about you, and change it when you apply for a different kind of role.
Education comes first
For a fresher, education is the strongest part of the resume, so put it near the top. List the newest first: your degree, then Class XII, then Class X.
- Degree: the course and branch, the college and university, the years, and your CGPA or percentage
- Class XII: the school, the board (CBSE, ICSE or your state board), the year and your marks
- Class X: the school, the board, the year and your marks
Write your grade the way your college writes it, with its scale. "CGPA 8.2/10" or "78%" is clear. A bare "8.2" is not, because the reader does not know the scale. If you are still studying, give your CGPA so far and say up to when. For example: "CGPA 7.9/10 (up to 6th semester)".
Some companies set a minimum mark for Class X, Class XII or the degree. A recruiter checking that needs to find these numbers quickly. Make them easy to find, in the same place for each school.
If you took a gap year, you do not have to explain it on the resume. Be ready to answer simply and honestly if an interviewer asks.
Projects show what you can do
Projects are where a fresher shows real skills. For each one, say what you built, the tools you used and what it does. If you worked in a team, say which part was yours. A link to the code or a live demo helps the reader check your work.
Final-year projects, mini projects, hackathon entries and course projects all count. Pick the two or three that fit the job best, and put the best one first.
Internships and training
List each internship with the company, your role, the dates and two or three lines on what you did. Industrial training and summer training count too. Even a short internship is worth listing if you can say what you worked on.
Start each line with an action word, such as built, tested, designed, wrote or presented. Add a number where you have a true one: how many users, records, pages or hours. Do not guess a number; leave it out instead.
Skills
Group your skills so they are easy to scan: languages, tools, and subjects you know well. List only skills you can talk about in an interview. A long list of tools you used once hides the ones you are good at.
Positions of responsibility and achievements
Being a class representative, a club lead or a fest organiser shows that you can lead and work with people. Give these their own section, with one line on what you did. Achievements go in a short list: a scholarship, a prize in a contest, or a course you finished.
Do you need a declaration?
Many Indian resumes end with a declaration, signed with a place and a date. It reads like this: "I hereby declare that the above details are true". Add one if your college's format or the employer asks for it. If not, the space is better used for a project.
